Commodes for Sale

Maximize Your Dignity and Independence

Most of us taking going to the bathroom for granted–we simply get up, walk there, do our business and move on. For patients who are mobility challenged, that one simple activity can become a significant source of stress. That’s also the case for patients with certain conditions where urgency may strike in an instant.

There’s no shame in having to ask a caregiver or nurse to aid you with a bedpan or even with making it to the toilet in the first place, but an in-room commode protects your dignity, maximizes your independence, and reduces the risk of occasional accidents, too. If you are looking into commodes for sale, read on to learn about the different options Burt’s Pharmacy offers.

Making the Decision to Use a Commode

Many of our patients struggle with the decision to finally use a commode or not. The ability to use the bathroom in privacy is such a fundamental freedom that it can feel as if you’re losing more than you really are. Those feelings are valid and normal.

The truth is that many patients struggle with reaching the bathroom in time. Conditions that affect the bladder and bowels are numerous, and include:

  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Interstitial cystitis
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Prostate disorders
  • Intussusception
  • Bladder nerve damage
  • Vagus nerve impairment
  • Fecal incontinence
  • Diverticulitis
  • Other inflammatory conditions

In addition to the conditions listed above, patients who struggle with age-related aches and pains, muscle weakness, osteoporosis, neurodegeneration, and even healing broken bones may find it difficult and downright dangerous to reach the bathroom. By using a commode, you reduce the length of time you remain standing–and that directly lowers the risk for a fall.

Selecting One of Our Commodes for Sale

Although the bedside commode is a simple device, they are available in a variety of styles and features. These features may or may not be suitable for every patient. When you are trying to decide between the different commodes for sale, the features listed here will allow you to choose which commode may be best for you or a loved one’s needs.

All-in-One Commodes – The all-in-one commode is robust, durable, and offers advanced functionality for patients who may have special needs. Adjustable legs and robust steel framing let you modify the all-in-one commode for any height. Most versions can accommodate up to 250 lbs.

Bariatric Commodes – Designed with big and tall clients in mind, bariatric commodes can withstand a much higher weight than other options. Thicker, sturdier parts also produce better durability over time, while the wider seat makes it easier to accommodate larger patients.

Foldable Commodes – Foldable commodes are simple and effective, but have the added benefit of folding up for storage when not in use. This makes them especially effective for patients who may only require them part-time or if a mobility-challenged relative is visiting.

Drop Arm Commodes – Similar in style to the all-in-one commode for most brands, the drop arm commode features adjustable arms that slide out of the way to make patient transfer simple. For elderly or infirm patients who experience weakness or paralysis, this is preferred.

Commode Safety

At Burt’s Pharmacy, keeping you safe is our first priority. That’s why we want to make sure that you not only have access to the medical aids you need, but know how to use them safely, too. When using your new commode, you should follow these safety protocols:

  • Place the commode on a hard, flat surface
  • Keep wipes, washcloths, and tissue in arm’s reach
  • If desired, keep a wash basin and clean cloths nearby, too
  • Always lock the commode wheels when in use
  • Add a few cups of water to the basin before each use
  • Set the lid down on the commode only after getting safely back into bed
  • Have a caregiver or loved one clean the commode after each use
  • Use mild dish detergent and water or lysol to sterilize the commode

In cases of extreme weakness, where the ability to sit or stand is compromised, commode use should always be supervised by a caregiver.
