Ostomy Barrier Ring

Stay Protected, Dry, and Comfortable All Day Long

Seeking a way to keep your ostomy clean, dry, and free from irritation? Loose stools and output can sometimes result in leaks, and waste matter that makes contact with the skin. That contact can cause dermatitis and even infections that may seriously impact your health.

Use ostomy barrier rings to lock away the skin surrounding your stoma from leaks, loose waste matter, and irritation. These easy-to-apply devices are placed down and over the stoma itself. The base ring sits against your abdomen, while cellulose tissue wraps up and around it to provide maximum protection.

Once placed, ostomy barrier rings swell and lock into place. Waste channels out of your stoma and into your ostomy bag without making contact with the skin on your abdomen or outer stoma. It’s easy, effective, and simple!

How to Measure Your Stoma

Any patient with a stoma can utilize ostomy barrier rings unless otherwise specified by their surgeon or physician. Rings come in a variety of materials, brands, and sizes, so be sure to take your measurements before you shop.

The easiest way to measure your stoma is with a stoma measuring card. These are available at most pharmacies and your doctor’s office, though it is possible to print one out online if necessary. Like a stencil, the stoma measuring card contains a series of cutouts sized from tiny to extremely large. Whichever size you are able to place over your stoma comfortably is your ostomy barrier ring size.

Beware of incorrect measurements. If the card cutout pinches your stoma or skin, it’s too small. If there’s a gap between the edges of the cutout and your stoma, it’s too large. The edges of the stencil should come to the sides of your stoma without cutting into it or pinching.

How to Shop for Ostomy Barrier Rings

Have your measurements? You’re ready to shop. Because you’ll likely change your ostomy barrier ring at least once or twice per day, shop in bulk–you’ll save the most money. Most brands offer packs containing 10-20 rings per box. This is typically the best deal for patients who are budget-conscious.

Ostomy Barrier Ring Options

Every patient’s stoma is unique, and that means that ostomy barrier rings need to be unique, too. Understanding the differences between each version is the best way to ensure that you find the best barrier ring for your needs.

Gel Barrier Rings – Use gel barrier rings when you need a quick, easy, moldable solution that can be formed around the base of your stoma. Usually made from plant-sourced gelatin, this ring style is one of the easiest to use and most difficult to apply incorrectly.

Silicone Barrier Rings – Attach a silicone barrier ring to your stoma for comfortable, robust, and durable support all throughout the day. Silicone offers improved results for patients who are sensitive to gelatin, latex, or other barrier ring materials.

Barrier Ring Strips – For odd-sized stomas and patients who struggle with traditional rings, ostomy barrier ring strips may provide improved customization capabilities. Unlike rings, this barrier comes in strip format. Lay strips around the stoma until you’ve achieved the coverage level you desire.
