Ostomy Supplies

Dignity. Understanding. Support.

For patients who have an ostomy, feeling secure and comfortable is often challenging. Concerns about comfort, complications, and security from leaks can cause unnecessary stress and isolation.

Your ostomy doesn’t have to be a barrier! With the right ostomy supplies, you can effectively eliminate these concerns. From standard equipment to advanced ostomy bags, having the right equipment is the best way to empower yourself to live as normal a life as possible with your condition.

Knowing what to shop for in the first place? That’s the first step. As your Good Neighbor pharmacy, we want to help you make your shopping experience stress-free. That’s why we’ve created a short guide to help you better understand ostomy supplies before you shop.

Consult With Your Care Team

Before we get started, we want to stress the importance of speaking with your pharmacist or medical care team about ostomy supplies. Your ostomy may require specialized care; it’s important to understand how to care for it correctly. This guide is for information purposes only and should not replace the advice of a physician or surgeon.

Ostomy Pouches

By far the most important supply, ostomy pouches catch and hold waste until you can reach a bathroom. Patients with stomas will rely upon ostomy pouches almost exclusively. Because ostomy pouches must be sized to your stoma, you will need to know the size of your stoma before you shop.

Wipes

Ostomy and stoma wipes make keeping your stoma site, pouch, and supplies clean easier than ever. Use alcohol swabs to sterilize your supplies before you attach them to your stoma. Use barrier wipes to protect the skin around your stoma from irritation, redness, and chafing from your pouch.

Spray

Some patients find barrier sprays and disinfectants easier to use than wipes, yet sprays still provide the same easy access to sterilization and protection. Simply spray your supplies or stoma site as per the instructions on the back of the can for maximum benefit. Choose from no-sting sprays that sterilize without irritation and barrier sprays that contain nourishing vitamin E.

Rings

Prevent leaks and accidents with ostomy rings. Sometimes referred to by the brand name Eakin rings, they sit over the stoma and swell to block off the skin underneath. For patients who experience mild leakage over time, this is an effective way to reduce skin irritation and chafing. Rings are sized to your stoma, so shop with your measurements on hand.

Paste

Reduce irritation with barrier pastes that effectively lock out moisture and waste. Simply spread the barrier paste on the skin around your stoma and then place your ostomy bag over it securely. Adhesive pastes protect skin and also lock your ostomy pouch in place to prevent slipping, leaks, and chafing, too.

Barrier Strips

Use barrier strips in the same way as adhesive paste–to lock your ostomy pouch and supplies in place. By securing your ostomy, you effectively prevent chafing and irritation around your stoma site. Shop for a variety of sizes and shapes to best suit your needs, or trim larger strips for a custom fit.

Odor Control

Concerned about pouch odors? Many patients worry about smells and odors when they can’t get to a stall to change out waste. Odor control drops and solutions effectively reduce this risk, extending your freedom and independence whether you’re at work or at home. Follow all instructions for use carefully for maximum benefit.

Night bags

Most patients sleep between six and eight hours per night while wearing a pouch. During sleep, the body often processes and releases additional waste, so the need for roomier storage space is higher. Night bags are larger and more suitable for this downtime than traditional daytime ostomy bags.

Other Accessories

In addition to ostomy supplies basics, additional accessories may make your experience with managing your stoma or ostomy easier. Choose from items like belts that secure your ostomy pouch, pouch covers, extra-secure stoma caps, filters, underwear, and much, much more.
